Senegal Parrots

Senegal Parrots, scientifically known as Poicephalus senegalus, are native to the woodlands and savannas of West Africa and have a charcoal gray head, gray beak, and green feathers covering their back and throat. A unique feature is the yellow or orange V-shaped patch on their lower breast and abdomen, resembling a vest. There are three recognized subspecies: P. s. senegalus with a yellow vest, P. s. versteri with a deep orange-red vest, and P. s. mesotypus which is paler with a green breast extending further down toward the orange abdomen. The subspecies are distinguished by their vest color and regional distribution in the wild.
While generally considered more on the "quiet" side for most parrots, they can still let out some high-pitched screeches and squawks, especially when excited. Senegal Parrots are known to have an average vocabulary of 20-30 words, whistles, and other imitation noises. 'Clicking' back at their favorite people tends to be very common among all the Senegals I have known.
The Senegal parrot is a small, stocky parrot, only about 9-10 inches long, with a shorter tail than many parrots. They usually weigh anywhere between 120-150 grams, and on average have a life span of 25-30 years. They are well known for their charming personalities and talking ability. Senegals are intelligent, affectionate, and very playful, and do best with lots of bird toys and activities to keep them busy. Sometimes Senegals can be shy around people they don't know, and may move away from anyone or anything that is the least bit intimidating to them.
When it comes to nutrition, a varied diet is best. It is essential to provide a variety of foods to ensure they receive all the necessary nutrients for their overall health and well-being. A balanced diet for a Senegal might include a mix of high-quality seeds/pellets, fresh fruits, and veggies.
So,if you are looking for a colorful, chatty, and quirky companion, a Senegal Parrot might just be the perfect fit for you. You will enjoy a life of sass, charm, and endless entertainment!
